Week One Extra Credit Discussion

Q This week I have included an extra credit discussion. This grade will be added to your overall discussion grade and I recommend completing it as it could replace a low or missing future discussion grade later in the course. Please make sure to reply to at least two classmates. For this discussion you will need to 1. listen to the following radio broadcast (Think broadcast) that addresses many of the issues of contact and conquest we are discussing and address the related questions. 2. Read the various local news coverage of the Alamo and the burial grounds and address the related questions. 3. My overall goal is for you to reflect on how the past has shaped our understanding of our current time and to reflect on your own viewpoint of how you view the history of contact and conquest in the Americas of New World. It is important to reflect on the narrative and how this even affects your viewpoint; words such as New World, The Americas, Natives, Indians, Colonizers, Conquistadors, murders, infectious disease, conquest, contact, all affect how we interpret the history and how we view what happened as well as how we view the issues in our time. Think broadcast: How religion, violence, and greed shaped Latin America https://think.kera.org/2019/10/23/how-religion-violence-and-greed-shaped-latin-america/Links to an external site. 1. What is you overall reaction to this piece? Do you agree with what was said by Marie Arana? 2. What is the piece directly relates to what we read about in Gorn 1 and/or Hollitz 1? What is the piece was new information that you did not know before? 3. After listening to this piece, how has your understanding of contact and conquest changed? Has your view changed in any way or has it become more supported by what was said in the broadcast? 4. What was the one part of the broadcast that caught your attention or stood out to you most? It could be a new fact, thought or opinion that you learned from the broadcast. One thing that stood out to me was when Marie Arana reflected on what Montezuma thought of Cortes and that he viewed Cortes and his men as smelling oddly or I think she said barbaric and that he was so suprised that Cortes wanted to rule becaus Montezuma just saw him as a wanderer and not really a threat to his power as Montezuma was so powerful himself. Also, the idea Marie mentions that it was not just the Spanish who conqured Montezuma and the Aztecs on their own (as with other groups she discusses such as the Incas), it was their ability to get the other native groups/tribes who were enemies of the Aztecs to fight on their side and this is why they succeeded. *These are just a few of the concepts Marie Arana shares that stood out to me and you can include any idea or fact or opinion that stands out to you. Select two of the above news articles/interviews and compare and contrast the articles.* I highly recommend viewing the KLRN interview (it last about 9 minutes) 2. What does this reveal about the history of the Alamo? Do you feel that just the battle of the Alamo should be included in the history of should the history include all of the time period of the Alamo as a mission? 3. Did you know about this issue prior to reading these articles? What does this reveal about how the history of the Alamo is portrayed? Are all sides represented in the history of the Alamo; why or why not? 4. What is your opinion in regards to this issue? How do you think this issue will be resolved?

I found this very interesting and like that we take a dive into the history of these countries around us, as we are in many ways connected. I agree with some of the things she mentioned, but it also left me with a lot of questions. I started wondering exactly how much help America had provided these Latin American countries with, and how much if any bias she approached this topic with. One thing that I thought related to the chapters I read, was how they portray the new things the settlers and explorers find. We have seen how much convincing is done to make sponsors, potential settlers, and the natives believe in these great ideas that often come around and stab them in the back.
